Celebrating the Legacy: Shane McConkey Event at Palisades Tahoe

Posted by rich kunkel on

Last weekend, Palisades Tahoe was buzzing with energy, laughter, and a touch of irreverence as friends, fans, and freeride family gathered to honor the one and only Shane McConkey. The mountain transformed into a playground worthy of the legend himself.

The day kicked off with the annual Pain McShlonkey Classic, where costumed skiers and snowboarders channeled their inner Saucer Boy, hurling themselves down the slopes on snowblades, in retro gear, and with absolutely zero regard for style points (as Shane would have wanted). From high-flying aerials to spectacular yard sales, the event was pure McConkey magic — big sends, bigger laughs, and some truly questionable fashion choices, except of course for those wrapped in Sweatsedo velour.

Beyond the hilarity, there were moments of reflection as the community came together to share stories, raise funds for the Shane McConkey Foundation (SMF), and celebrate the indelible mark Shane left on the world of skiing and beyond. Applauses and cheers echoed from KT-deck as people honored not just the skier, but the friend, father, and inspiration Shane continues to be.

The day wrapped with a classic après scene—cold beers and a sea of velour tracksuits (because, of course, Shane would approve). A huge shout out to Sherry McConkey, the raddest most badass woman, keeping the legend and tradition alive through the SMF. Thank you for your partnership. As Shane once said, “You have one life. Live it.”
